The late Steve Hudson was responsible for many memorable traditional styled narrowboats before his untimely passing. Orient was one of his earliest examples and was apparently built for his own use. Before fitting the interior the boat was sold to its first owner who completed 80% of the work. He was a highly talented craftsman in wood and the interior now is a beautiful example of what can be achieved with pine and hardwood. The pine has been used in the cupboards and fitted units throughout, many with bevelled glass in the doors; the hardwood covers the entire floor, except in the engine room (2 tons of wooden planks each fixed with heavy brass screws). The engine is a JP2M, from 1936 with a Lister Marine gearbox. There is a stand alone Lombardini generator plus inverter, battery charger etc. Diesel central heating, Premier range in boatman’s cabin, Squirrel stove in the lounge more than adequately heats the interior. The forward lounge, galley, walk-through shower room, main bedroom, engine room and authentic boatman’s cabin provide masses of storage space. The boat has been very well maintained following its completion in 2002 – the shell having been completed in 1995. A lovely head-turner of a boat which sounds great, is beautifully fitted and very well equipped.
